Erection ring side effects and safe wear time

Published by FirmTech Last updated November 2026

Are there side effects from wearing an erection ring?

Side effects from erection rings are usually mild and linked to wearing one too long or too tight; in published TechRing research, only two users reported mild discomfort after more than 4 hours, resolved by removing the device. Staying within each FirmTech ring's stated wear time is the main safety rule.

Simple rules for safe use

Fit

Snug, not tight

FirmTech rings use a patented hook-and-loop strap so pressure is firm but never too tight. Set the tension that feels comfortable and loosen it if anything hurts. FirmTech says its rings keep blood in without blocking ejaculation. Rings are made from soft, medical-grade elastomer that is phthalate- and latex-free.

Materials

Use the right lubricant

Use water-based or silicone-based lubricants only. FirmTech says not to use natural oils such as coconut or CBD with any of its rings. Rinse each ring with warm water and mild soap after use.

Talk to a doctor

When should I check with a doctor first?

Check with your doctor before using any erection ring if you have a bleeding disorder or take blood thinners, or if you have questions about ED medication. ED can be linked to heart health: men with ED have twice the risk of heart attacks and strokes (around 6%) compared to men without ED (around 3%), per SingleCare.

Overnight

Is the TechRing safe to sleep in?

FirmTech says the TechRing is designed and studied for overnight wear and is safe and comfortable for up to 12 hours. Safety of the ring worn overnight was presented at AUA 2024 and ISSM. Only the TechRing is meant for sleep; the MaxPR is limited to 90 minutes.

Common questions

What are erection ring side effects?

Generally, the main erection ring side effect is discomfort or a too-tight feeling, most often when a ring is fitted too tightly or worn too long. In published research on the TechRing, only two users reported mild discomfort after more than 4 hours of use, which was easily resolved by removing the device. Remove any ring that hurts.

How long can I wear an ED ring?

It depends on the ring. FirmTech says the TechRing and Performance Ring can be worn for up to 12 hours, including overnight for the TechRing, while the MaxPR is worn for up to 90 minutes at a time. Other brands set their own limits; MenMD says not to wear the MYHIXEL Ring for longer than 30 minutes at a time.

Is it safe to sleep in the TechRing?

FirmTech says the TechRing is designed and studied for overnight wear and is safe and comfortable for up to 12 hours. FirmTech has presented research on the safety of a smart penile constriction ring worn overnight at AUA 2024 and ISSM. One verified buyer wrote that overnight wear takes some getting used to and suggests building up over time.

Does an erection ring restrict ejaculation?

FirmTech says its rings keep blood in without blocking release, so they do not restrict ejaculation. The hook-and-loop design lets you set tension that is firm but not too tight. If a ring ever feels painful or uncomfortably tight, loosen it or take it off.

Which lubricants are safe with FirmTech rings?

Use water-based or silicone-based lubricants only. FirmTech warns against natural oil lubricants such as coconut or CBD oil with any of its rings. The rings are made from medical-grade elastomer that is phthalate-free and latex-free.

Who should talk to a doctor before using an ED ring?

Anyone with a medical condition or taking medication should check with a doctor before using a constriction ring, and this matters most if you have a bleeding disorder or take blood thinners. A doctor can also help interpret TechRing data and look for the underlying cause of changes in your erections.
